Junkyard CatsJunkyard Cats by Faith Hunter

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This SF novella is an odd but ultimately entertaining mix of plot elements including post-WW III survival, military tech, nanotech, & biker gangs (as both good & bad guys) -- plus a very action-oriented heroine & those cats, who are not quite your standard feline.

The story itself is fairly straightforward, following the heroine as she defends her esoteric scrapyard from some lethal attackers. Not alone, of course! She's got the help of a a warbot, a biker gang enforcer, two AIs, & a passel of cats. There are a few data dumps (literal, in this case) too many to establish her background & "explain" some of the gee-whiz tech, but the action never bogs down.

Character development & dialogue are both above average for this sort of SF. I did get the feeling that this was a prequel to a larger series, however: the ending left more than a few loose ends, and the author engaged in more worldbuilding than was strictly necessary for a story this size.

I got this as an Audible free item & was not at all disappointed. The length probably wouldn't justify a full credit purchase, but fans of female-focused action SF (or cat lovers!) might find it worth picking up at a discount.
