My Goodreads review: City of Endless Night

City of Endless Night by Douglas PrestonMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
Everyone's favorite Special Agent returns to his investigative roots with this straightforward entry into the Pendergast chronicle. No exotic locales, no (possibly) supernatural aspects to the case. Just multiple bizarre homicides in NYC -- the City of Endless Night -- with Vincent D'Agosta & the NYPD more than slightly stymied.
With Constance Greene offstage in Tibet, & Proctor only slightly in evidence, this struck me as being pretty basic Pendergast -- but that's a good thing, too. Preston & Child have created a straight-up thriller that worked just fine, and might be a good entry point for new readers. After the last couple of novels, it was rather refreshing to watch the authors dial the weird back a notch, & give us some insights into Pendergast's character & methods instead.
Regular readers of this series may find this one a bit low key, but the pages turn or click (or silently evaporate into the Audible aether) very quickly just the same. And for those of us who miss the "mythos" aspects, there's an epilogue with a few tantalizing loose ends.
But isn't there always?
