Two Graves (Pendergast #12)Two Graves by Douglas Preston

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Although this installment of Agent Pendergast's exploits came out last winter, I'd recommend it as an excellent summer read -- but only to Pendergast loyalists who haven't yet had time to partake. Even more so than most of this series, Two Graves is not the place to start getting to know this enigmatic character & his widening circle of associates. Start with Relic. You'll thank yourself later.

However, for regular readers, Two Graves delivers pretty much everything we've come to expect from these oddly addictive thrillers. As the last of the Helen Trilogy, it does wind up the incredibly strange tale of Pendergast's wife -- but not without introducing a new character or two to keep the series alive. Saying much more would introduce spoilers, although it's probably safe to mention that the mystery of Constance Greene is also explained at long last.

I did find one of the subplots a little too far removed from the main action, and I really do wish Preston & Child would give us all a concordance of characters & events in their series. Even with the aid of my Kindle Fire's X-Ray feature, I had trouble remembering certain important plot points from previous novels.

Despite these quibbles, however, I had a huge amount of fun reading this one. If you've been waiting, summer is probably the perfect time to indulge.
