Well, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] science_at_nasa , we now know more about the poor stuck Martian rover Spirit's new career path.  It seems that a less-mobile rover is just the thing to help Earthbound observers learn amazing things about the core of the red planet.

I continue to be fascinated by how much these cheap little explorers are doing for our knowledge of Mars -- years after they were supposed to turn up their mechanical toes & fall silent.  There is still the Martian winter to get through, though . . . and there's some question as to whether Spirit managed to tilt its solar panels properly.
